    Trade Act

A client lost his job and the Trade Act is paying for his college tuition. My client received a Form 1098-T Tuition Statement with an $$amount in box 2 & box 8 is checked as 'at least a half-time student.

My question: Even though my client is not paying, but the Trade Act is, can my client claim the credit? I'm thinking he cannot, so I don't understand why he would even receive the 1098-T.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Is the money from the trade act reported as income to him? If it is I'd say he can use the tuition. If not then no.
In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.

      Trade Act

No, he does not receive any money from Trade Act. But he is able to draw unemployment benefits longer as long as he is attending college. Thank you for responding
