It seems that Schedule L provides a larger tax deduction for single or HOH taxpayers than married taxpayers in regards to line 5 if just one of the taxpayers are over age 65 or blind. Does anyone know the logic of line 5 of schedule L?? Maybe my mind just isn't sharp enough this afternoon.

The standard deduction has been that way since the beginning of time....or at least since 1987 when the standard deduction replaced the zero bracket amount.
Single and HOH get a higher standard deduction for being blind and/or age 65 or older than MFJ, MFS, and QW. Schedule L didn't change anything. Look on the front cover of TTB under 2009 Standard Deduction.
