    American Opportunity Refundable

I know there was a post on this, but I can't find it. Anyway, a potential client got a letter from the college about this and said 'even if you don't owe tax' file to get this.

So, this is already pointed out I'm sure, but this would be a good recommendation for some to file would it not? Not enough to file, no tax due, but borrowed lots of money and have at least $4000 tuition in one of the first four years of college - and will receive $1,000 for the 40% refundable portion of $2,500.

I imagine it'll cause a lot of dependents to file improper returns. Hey, free money!

After you rule out those who can be claimed as dependents, how many students are left really. Well, quite a few, but I think most of the students I knew when I was in school at age 24 or higher also had jobs and other income that created a need to file.
