but they said visits were going to be at the last of this month. I'm curious too and am gonna run a poll on it sometime after the first of February if somebody doesn't do it first.

I'm sort of thinkin' I'll be okay buutttt..................you never know in this business, so I'm a little drawn-up about it. I'll just knock on wood, hope for the best, and expect the worst.

Good grief, that's the last thing I need right now! As if all this new junk (L-M-house-car-energy credits) they've loaded on us isn't enough to curl your lip. Tell you what, steering a straight line through all this muck is certainly makin' me feel as straight-up ethical as any SOB they send to see me.

I would think (dangerous perhaps!) that IRS would visit those who did a large number of returns involving the EIC. (This does not address the separate issue of the 10,000 "randomly" sent letters to preparers admonishing them to (quote Sergeant Phil on Hill Street Blues) to "be careful out there.)

My EIC percentage is about 4.5%, so hopefully this issue won't involve me.

        Irs Audit

One of my preparers received a letter. The IRS agent wanted to come to her house to see the returns after many phone calls he finally realized that they were not there. She did not do returns at home only for me .He wanted her to be present at the time of the audit she works a good day job does returns for me nights and Saturday.During peak she is there every night mostly appointments she makes. He is coming tomorrow @ 10:00 am. I tried to explain to him to come after peak but he would not.He asked for a desk and a phone I told him we have no desks we are a liquor store and I would give him a table and a chair no phone we only use cell phones for the tax office and only have one line for the liquor store and one phone.I said I will pull the 125 returns he wants out the the storage boxes for him .We did over 2300 returns with 80% EIC. I thought they would come but the letter would be to the efin holder not the individual preparers.I don't know what he would have done if she no longer worked for me this season. Will update Monday night if I don't end up in jail or the hospital with a heart attack.I know all the returns are OK we lose at least 100 returns a year we refuse to do.

          Naea

First of all, you'll be OK. Do post afterwards to tell us all about it, though.

NAEA asked that those that received The Letters contact them. They will update as they learn about these Visits on the NAEA e-newsletters. Maybe NATP is compiling similar information.

I know EIC was one issue stated in the letters, but weren't there others, such as Schedules C?

            Eic Audit

I have already spoke to NAEA I am a member they also said not to worry.I actually have not seen the letter sent to the preparer she is a nice lady but a little rough around the edges. That is the main reason I don't want her to be there if possible she may tell him where to go.He seems like this may be one of his first audits. He asked me how to use metro to come to my location I told him I have never ridden on metro. He said he does not have a car.

Spoke with a friend at the Cincinnatti district office and they are assigning very few to this project, mostly to high volume EIC storefront operations. As Willie Sutton once said "you go where the easy money is."

                not here

                I haven't seen one, thankfully.
If I'm wrong, please correct me, because I don't have the tax knowledge y'all have. Cheers!

First, I know nothing about your practice, or the quality of service. So, this post isn't intended to offend you. But, I'm not surprised you were selected for a visit.

Wow! That's a heck of a practice. 2300 returns from a liquor store, and 80% EIC? My understanding is many of the visits will be very routine, but with a high volume of EIC returns, I would expect more. How do you meet with clients if you have no desks, chairs, or phones? Do you just set up a table during the tax season? If the preparer works for you, I would think you have some responsibility for her returns, and it would be a good idea for you to be there. Good luck!

I haven't received any calls either.

But from my impression of reading the letter they were only coming for a "visit" to talk about due diligence of preparing returns. I did not think they were going to actually ask for client returns to review. So I am wondering if this was a different letter your preparer received?

For "routine" visits, I believe that's correct. The visit of the poster's doesn't appear to be "routine" because of the nature of the practice.

                        For the record

we're talking about two different letters. I mentioned the more serious one in my
post up there and it covers many different issues.
The second type of letter refers only to returns with EIC on them.

It is the first letter which NAEA wants to know about. Of all the EA's I know, only
one received such a letter, but of course they were sent to all types of preparers.

This first week in February has been extremely busy here and I'll venture to say it's the same by you!

So, when you get a moment to come up for air let us know how it went.
