    Tax Preparer Sanctions

I am quite excited about this opportunity to be able to connect with tax professionals to ask questions and read thoughtful replies on tax matters. I am a 4th year tax professional. I am quite eager to learn as much as I can along my journey, and at some point, I would like to tackle the EA examination. I think a professional forum such as this one will elevate my professionalism. I read on yesterday that the IRS has begun to put teeth into who will be able to file a tax return for payment. Apparently, the IRS will be mailing out thousand of letters and making visits to tax professional regarding administrative matters on previous year(s) tax return(s). As a tax pro, should we look at the letters and visits as teachable moments from IRS to help us in our profession? Also, once the new regulations goes into effect, are tax professionals that are not an attorney, CPA, or EA will have to be state certified...similiar to a barber, electrican, etc?

    Welcome

Thad, you are correct. This message board is a wonderful source of information where questions and opinions are bantered about. I have been on the board since its beginning and have learned more than I could have ever imagined. And we have fun too. Expect to build a comraderie with other members that are flung from Maine to Hawaii. If you put your home state into your profile it may help with state tax matters, but that's up to you.

Most of us are in agreement that regulation is necessary because we are in competition with poorly trained and unscrupulous preparers that leave egg on the face of our profession. My perspective agrees with the above, except we are dragging a dragon into our parlor, and once the govt gets in control of the industry via regulation, they will make our life miserable. All we have to do is look at our regulated industries, such as the Food and Drug administration -- has become a way for the multibilliondollar food producers, distributors and retailers to squelch competition and does not really even protect the public from dangerous products (its original purpose).

Welcome to the board, and visit soon!

      Definitely a "teachable moment."

It is kind of exciting (learning new practical and extremely useful stuff you don't know, but need to) isn't it? And this is a good place for it -- nobody will make fun of you or give you a cussin' and you can ask anything you want.

Yeah, I think I'd call it a "teachable" moment -- I'd be extremely interested to hear what a visiting fireman/agent has to say/ask/whatever. However, I don't really expect anybody to show up -- they're continally pleading lack of personnel and I can't see how they can spare the horses/agents for such a largely symbolic gesture.

Supposedly so, although it'll likely be much evolved by the time all the lobbyists are finished. Here's the link:

Drop in again. Do you happen to know where I can get a good taco?
