    Not Changed Married Name

What do you feel about a couple that has been married for 22 years now and the wife never changed her name on the Social Security card? She still has her maiden name.
It confuses me whenever I transmit and get a rejection because of it and call her and then she tell me about it and transmit again. What do you do with people like that?

You do nothing about it .The woman does not want to change her name.

I was wondering what software you use because when you do your update from last year to this year all the info is transferred. There is no need to input all the info again.

First year I have them. When I called her she said after 22 years she did not want to bother changing. Too much paper work or red tape. Which is fine with me.

Some women got their social security card when they started working. Under their maiden name. At the time people really didn't know to change it to their married or didn't bother too. When efile started becoming more popular thats when alot of issues popped up with the maiden name and married name.

Women had went for years without changing their social security card. Like as your client 22 years. When we first started doing efile it came up very often the first 2 years. Ususally they would go and get it changed. If not just used their maiden name.

Its not necessarily women's lib. Especially if she is going by her married name normally. Sometimes there was just not a need to do it until efile

            31 years

31 years, my wife never changed her name. Why should she? I always ask every new client what their Social Security name is, and who should be listed first on the return. I never assume nothing about nothing.

After this I will ask no matter how many years they were married. I just figured after that long it would be the same.
It took me 2 weeks of calling and phone tags to get her to get her maiden name on the return. I told her the money will be later because of that and she got mad at ME! Your right I want let that happen again. And **** and Jane can go somewhere else next year.
                I learned my lesson!!

                  name changes

It is nice that they tell you BEFORE you e-file the return that they still have their maiden name. Some that I have done didn't bother to tell me that they had not notified social security when they got married and so when I put their married name on the form of course it got rejected. You have to use whatever name the social security administration is using.

I had one client this year who claimed mother as dependent. Mother's social security form (1099SSA) listed mothers name and social security as such and such. Also receives checks in that name. However, would not accept this name and SSN for E-File. Upon check with SS found out that IRS had a different name.

My number one rule: Give me all of your SS cards to copy for my file. A lot of their kids even have different last names too! Thank you for bleeding off on someone that understands.
