Las Vegas IRS Forum this year

For several years we've gone to the IRS forum in Las Vegas held at the Rio. Unfortunately, we were not able to go to Vegas this year. I know it was held at Mandalay Bay. For those who have attended both, what was your feeling about Mandalay Bay? Were there improvements in traffic flow? Did you find it difficult to learn new layouts? Any real problems? We're looking forward to going in 2010 and are interested in your comments and impressions. Thank you.

My wife and I attended the IRS Tax Forums in 2008 and 2009. We did not stay at Mandalay Bay but elsewhere on the strip. I didn’t feel that the traffic flow was as good as it was at the Rio. My wife had to use a wheel chair and the one really bad thing was that the Forum sessions were on two different floors and the one set of elevators was at the end of the floor rather than somewhere in the middle. It was sometimes difficult to get to the next session as you had 15 minutes between sessions. It did involve a lot of walking unless your next session was in the same room or at least on the same floor. I think that the attendance was down somewhat, I believe they said there were about 4500 attendees.

        It sounds like a mess.

As many folks as we've seen in wheelchairs, scoot-arounds, and with walkers, that sounds like a terrible way to handle things. Thanks for the information.

          I was there....

I attended the IRS Tax Forum in Las Vegas this year. It was my first time so I didn't have a prior experience to compare it to. My only thought was the entrances were poorly managed. During the morning forums, they tried to wait to allow people into the room until the scanners were up. This created gridlock at the doorways. Later in the day, they allowed you into the rooms ahead of time....you just went back and scanned once the scanners were up.

A pet peeve of mine were the people that came in....scanned in....and then left. I saw this happen several times. I wish they would have people scan when entering and again upon exiting.

I did not stay at the Mandalay Bay either. I found a cheaper package deal on Priceline and had a two room suite with a kitchenette + airfare for about $500.00 for the entire stay.

I've never stayed at where the forums are held. We play a little while we're there and have always received free offers from other casinos. So what if we stay 2 nights in a room and then change to somewhere else for another 2 free nights? I'm not sure why they changed from the Rio, but it doesn't sound like it was a good move. Several years ago it was held in Reno and was absolutely chaotic. We swore we would never attend another one again. But we've combined vacation with the forums, so it's not so bad. My biggest gripe is traffic flow. Folks don't seem to know how to walk down the aisles. I look at it as the way we drive, stay to the right except to pass. But noooo, there's always a small group who thinks it's ok to drive on the wrong side of the street.

I have found this to be an issue at any large meeting I have attended. The other complaint I have is a group of friends gathering "IN THE DOORWAY" to decide where they will go eat.

I have been to enough IRS forums in Las Vegas to know that I will never go to another IRS forum in Las Vegas. Too many people, too much chaos, and, most of all, when I am in Vegas I want to play in Vegas, not go a a seminar.

I have been to the Rio & Mandaly seminars.
The Rio was acceptable. The Mandalay was overpriced both on rooms & on food concessions (nevermind a $10 gin & tonic at any of their bars).
The meeting rooms were in Area 51 compared to my room. (IE: walk a mile or two). As usual, the conference is like the 405 at rush hour.
If you play the slots, they are stingy. The honor bar charged me $15 for a $2 box of chocolate somethings which I did not consume.
Needless to say, I will not go back to the Mandalay. I will go to the Super Seminars at the Flamingo in May.
