    Deadline Amended Returns

    Hey!

I am looking into amending a return where the client filed HOH back in 2002. She is currently MFJ, but we would only be amending the return in order to take advantage of tuition she paid for her daughter, as well as points paid on the closing of her home. I took a look at the deadline and it said 3 years from the date originally filed, or 2 years from the date the tax was paid; whichever is later. It was filed April 10, 2003, so we'd make the deadline.

Where would I enter in her change of name? Or would I need to? She doesn't live at the address listed on the original 1040 either. Is there anything I should watch out for?

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Amended return

If you take a look at a form 1040X, there is a checkbox regarding the address question. As for the name, I would leave it as it was on the original return. You are amending the return to claim the additional items you mentioned and not to amend the name. Not 100% sure on that, so perhaps someone else will jump in.

      Different name

I have no cite for this, but personally I would use the current name on any amended return, and probably put a note about the name change in the note section.

        I looked...

I looked everywhere I could think of and couldn't find solid answer for this. I would agree with Bill.

That,s correct. Use her current name and in the explaination section provide the name that she used on the original return. These returns are manually processed so the IRS employee who checks it will be able to track it.
