    Hiring kids on the farm

Dad wants to pay his kids to work on the farm.

Two boys, ages 8 and 6.

Not many hours in a year, maybe 150 -200 hours each.

Work is limited, obviously, by their age. No restrictions in this state for hiring your minor kids on the farm.

How much per hour? Minimum wage, or can it be less?

He will issue W-2 to each. Not subject to SS, MED, FUTA, SUTA.

As long as the farm is a sole proprietorship of partnership of husband and wife, the children are not subject to the employment taxes. The children will be eligible for an IRA. And at their age, the tax free growth is a good investment.
