My office is in my home out in the boonies of CT where floods could keep me from returning to my home, power outages and spikes have fried my equipment and corrupted data and made it too cold to work from home in February (I have an UPS and whole-house protection), carbon monoxide alarm evacuations keep me out of my office for hours at a time (we've repaired the furnace, water heater, propane dryer, car, etc.), or a fire such as happened across the street during last tax season could melt everything in sight. If I put one of my hard drives in my safe deposit box, I can't get to it until banking hours. With VMS, I can grab my laptop or go to the library or rent a computer or use a friend's and be back in business from anyplace with an internet connection. I still use an external hard drive and flash drives, but VMS gives me less to worry about.

Does Carbonite slow your computer down when backing up?

I use carbonite...I believe it's $50.00 a year but I usually find a coupon for a huge saving or cashback...unlimited storage but caveat...it won't automatically do video files (not an issue for me but could be for some).

Just how slow does your computer run when Carbonite is backing up your data when you are using applications on your computer? I normally power off my computer from 9pm to 5am depending on the time of the year.

Lion: You just about have me sold on VMS. (I've seen their info over on the Unofficial ATX Forum and every now & then I tell myself to check them out).

I kept thinking they had some good services for someone working alone from home, but sat on that fence. Then one day I downloaded a new driver for my printer and could NOT print. I called and signed up for their tech support and for their backup, too. Been a couple of years, and they've bailed me out of some troubles. Not long ago, my husband was having big problems with his computer. We added his to our subscription. He had multiple things going on, so it was a two or more day deal; much of the time he didn't have to be there as a great techie cleaned up his computer. And, he still has a year's worth of calls if he needs them!

Thank you for mentioning me if you sign up. When I added hubby's computer, I talked them into a bit of an extra discount for being one of their early subscribers. So, it'll prove my worth to them.

Don't think Kyle is still in their sales dept. We've used some great techs: Susan, Tom, Guy. As you say, you can read all about them over at the unofficial ATX site, as Eric is good friends with them. Good luck.
