HSA - switching to wife's HDHP

Husband has had family coverage under a HDHP and a HSA account for many years.

Coverage is going to switch to the wife's employer's group HDHP.

Is it necessary for the HSA to be switched too.... or can the existing HSA be used going forward for new contributions?

I think it would be wise to open an HSA in the wife's name since the policy will be in her name.

That's just an opinion it'll bump your question back to the top.

Now that I have access to TheTaxBook, perhaps I can answer my own question....

page 13-29 requirement #1 states..."must be covered under a HDHP". Doesn't say must be the primary insured or anything like that.

      FWIW....page 13-30 states that HSA's can't be joint.

My advice therefor will be that the husbband and wife can continue to use the existing HSA of the husband for the family.

Just curious then, if the family had a qualified plan could you start a HSA in one of the childrens name?
