For those of you ProSeries users, how is working with Win 7?

Anybody? I'm about ready to purchase a new laptop (Sony VAIO CW series) with Win 7 and was debating whether or not to get the Win7 Home edition or Professional edition?

Use ProSeries for return prep but still use XP Pro. Guess I'm technologically deficient.

From what I read the Home Edition is sufficient. I will not purchase another puter until tax season is over. I have enough to learn as it is.

          Pro Series and Windows 7

I will use Windows XP for a least this tax season. Can see no benefit to switching operating systems now.

            XP vs Win 7

Another persepctive! I am going to order a new computer and I do have the option to order with XP Pro or Win 7- My computer tech is encouraging me to order with Win 7 so I can use both systems and eventually migrate. I am not comfortable, as the Software I use is still not up to speed on Win 7 and if it goes like Vista in another couple of years then we have another operating system.

So I am thinking to defer for now and stick with XP as long as it is available and then I know all will work - I typically am always 2 - 3 years behind Microsoft - so I am glad I didn't upgrade to Vista

By the way, my resources tell me that XP Pro will not "sunset" until about 2014

Give Bill Gates about 12-18 months to get the bugs out.

Always Always get the Business version of windows when using in a business (Pro in this case). You have options like remote desktop connection, backup, windows XP virtualization (in case your programs dont like Win 7), proper network logins, etc. For the extra ~$50 its not even worth asking.

That will be the case from here on out. Microsoft is already planning Windows 8 for a 2012 release. Plan on an OS release every 3 years. Xp -> Vista was a long time between (5 years, 01-06) releases. That was unusual.

Keep in mind that visualization also requires hardware support and many low end computers won't have it.

                      Windows 7 and Tax Season

Many tax pros know that switching operating systems near the filing season can bring trouble and glitches that one does not want. I don't know how compatible 7 is with XP but we are relying on our software vendors to assure complete compatibility and this is often not the case. Many times the software has to be used extensively to bring out the bugs and errors. We become the testers at our expense of time and stress when we find the problems that we thought the program considered.

In addition to coping with last minute tax law changes, the software company may not have the time or resources to devote to re-writing the code to work flawlessly with a new operating system.
