    Finding Property History

I have a New client. He wanted me to prepare a 1040X for 2002 & 2003 taxes he did elsewhere. The problem is I found out through POA that he had bought a property in NJ sometimes in late 1990s and sold same in 2006. A 1099S is in his record with IRS.

I told him we need to prepare 1040x from when the property was bought and sold BUT the problem is, he couldn't find his HUD and he wasn't sure the Exact Time & Price of purchase. Please, is there anywhere I can access this info, including 3rd party?. The lawyer involved in the purchase and sale no longer in operation.

    Property Search

Depending on the state you can look up property records on the internet. Here in MD you can find out the whole back history of any real estate by the address.Call a broker in the state where the property is located if you can not find it on Googgel.

Mlineder has given you good advice. Many (if not most) county assessors offices have that information available online. Do a search for the county asessor by name and that should help you find the relevant site.
