For those considering Windows 7 with XP mode

I never intended this to be a "bash Microsoft" post. I did not purchase the most expensive system available and certainly not the least. I've actually been a fairly staunch MS supporter over the years. Yes, there are always frustrations when one must go through a learning curve. I just want some accountability. (And yes, there should be some on my part also.)

It's very frustrating to update to something with the hope of being further able to update and then finding that you can't. So now I'll go through the season with what I have and look forward to having my IT guy come down next May and do clean installs on all my computers. That should give a little time for any major bugs to be worked out.

I see this trend everytime a new OS comes out.. Bash it until its been around 5 years, then hold on to it until someone prys it out of your hands. Same thing happened when XP came out, EVERYONE hated it, now no one wants to move on.

That's probably because it takes MS five years to work out the bugs trying to get the new system to work correctly. Plus, have you noticed that with each new release a lot is promised and as time gets closer, they begin to drop features they cannot get to work.

Of course, MS apologists will rise up on their haunches at this statement, but even though they ignore them in extolling virtues, the facts work against them. And, of course, ignoring the fact that users are trying to make a living for their family and need to control costs, want to blame the user for not expending large amounts of money to get the "latest and greatest" machine on the market - cost be ****ed.

Sorry if this sounds offensive, but the above attitude gets under my skin and I cannot just let it go unchallenged. Most people on this board are trying to do tax work - not be techies.

sent out a memo today saying they did not know for sure how "7" would work with their system, but wanted customers to load their updates for certain products that would be coming out in late November before customers loaded "7".

There is another trend with them: ever notice every-other operating system is pretty much trash? 3.11 started it all. Then came 95 - pretty good. 98 sucked, followed by an even worse ME, which was just to plug the gap until the brilliant 2000 came out. Xp was off to a rough start but had it mostly right, then we got Vista, which was over thought and under built.

Because Microsoft has a fantastic history of sticking it to its customers. Anyone here remember Windows ME? Or the first round of Vista?

Agreed that Windows ME was bad... but not any worse than windows 98... Neither of which anyone running a business should have used. You should have been on NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 (both very solid OS's)

Vista Pre SP1 wasnt half bad as long as you had plenty of memory.

Microsoft is NOT doing away with Vista. Vista is a very stable OS, but a memory hog. Microsoft IS doing away with XP.

You can Upgrade certain versions of Vista to 7 without a clean install.(programs stay)
You cannot do that with XP. XP to 7 requires a clean install. (reintall everything)

I was told by a computer tech that there are many things wrong with Vista and stick to XP when purchasing new computer. Microsoft is doing away with Vista because of all the errors. Just what I was told, so I stuck with XP and very happy I did!

Windows 7 was meant to be upgrade only for Vista it seems. Just yesterday I read
something SOMEwhere to the effect that one should NOT try to replace XP with the
new Windows 7 and if he does, conflicts will occur.

They added a VERY nice feature that can only be used if you have processor that supports virtualization. Its not thier fault you bought one that didnt. They have put that in processors for the last 2+ years (mid to high end machines).

7 is everything Vista should have been. Its basically the same core features, just made better and spead up.

According the the "test" my computer won't support this. I have a Dell Inspiron with a 2.5 GHz and 4 GB ram. I run ProSeries Professional and QB Pro 9, plus my Winfiler Plus for payroll. I just think MS is short-sighted in their approach to rolling out a new OS.

I don't know that I would "trust" that because it runs in Vista it will in 7.
