We need to impress on our clients that the Service never communicates directly with a taxpayer via email, only via USPS or in the rare case of a CID "visit" in which case they will have gold badges and ID cards and will probably be "packing."

Looks like a bad one!

This one sounds particularly "troublesome" (cited web page) especially to the unfortunate person who decides to open the email.

But as jimmcg noted, the best prevention is never to open such "IRS" emails in the first place.

I've noted in the past few weeks an increase in the amount of trapped/diverted incoming emails (from the titles) referring to my "accounts" in businesses that I've never dealt with.

Maybe it's just a sign of the times, and/or the Nigerian bank schemes are wearing thin.
