    If we reduce our prices, but do not receive a benefit in return (barter), or the person is not in our employ or being subcontracted by us - not a taxable event to us. Do you think so?

      At first reading of this thread I was inclined to categorize this 1099MISC income as bartering income, which would mean also subj to SE tax. But after re-reading, I cannot find any definitive information which states that the doctor gave any free services in exchange for this reduction in his wife's bill. I think the tax treatment would hinge on that fact.
