Off-topic: inkjet printer

Any suggestions on a reliable inkjet printer? Don't need the workhorse that we all use. This is for my mother and she just needs something that prints clear, not too expensive ($85-150) and speed is not an issue. She's been using an older Lexmark that died a couple days ago.

It's been so many years since I bought an inkjet and I have no idea what's out there.

I've had a couple of HP inkjet printers. Inexpensive. One came free with a laptop. Didn't use it with laptop, so hubby took it to school where he didn't have a printer in his classroom for a few years. When school finally bought printers, he brought it home and has been using it ever since here. Also have an HP all-in-one that's a great inkjet printer as well as fax, copier, etc., and inexpensive. You can sometimes find inkjets real cheap on CraigsList when someone upgrades or a business closes.

Some other thoughts

Would Mom need to have fax, scan and printing capabilities?

Does Mom need just black and white, or would color be an option?

Inkjets are expensive to operate, you can purchase the inkjet printer for not much money, but OMG just try to replace the cartridges.

I purchased a HP color inkjet all in one for my husband's computer and after rebates, etc only paid $50 - but then everytime I have to buy the cartridges the cost is close to $80 and they never seem to last very long - not many pages per cartridge

I would take a look at HP, or Brother, but might want to invest a little more going toward laser as there are more pages per print cartridge than what an inkjet offers.

I wouldn't wish a black and white inkjet on anyone. Inkjet printing runs if it gets the least bit damp and as ST mentioned the costs of operation are greater than for a black and white laser. If you need color though, color inkjet is a reasonable choice as even pictures up to say 4x6 can look almost as good as similar film pictures. My understanding is that color laser is fine for graphs and charts and such but not as good as an inkjet for photos. And of course few of us want to pay for a dye sublimation printer that would admittedly be state of the art for photos but totally too expensive to use for general printing.

I did discuss the laser idea and told her the pluses and if I find one that is inexpensive, I'll nudge her in that direction, as she is not opposed to the idea.

The reason I'm asking is that she did like her old one even though she did complain that the inkjet cartridge was about $40 per.

I'll check this weekend and I'm sure I can find something that will fit the bill.
