    Nonprofit Sports Team

Does anyone have any experience on what needs to be filed for a nonprofit sports team?

We have teams around here that the players play just for the fun of it. No one gets paid. The ticket sales go for supplies only and to pay people like refs and cleanup crews.

I do not know if they have filed for nonprofit status yet. Any advice is welcome.

    Thanks

In order to be accepted by IRS as tax exempt - you need to apply by filling out Form 1023 or Form 1024 and wait for IRS approval.
To be a 501(c)(3) organization, where donations are tax deductible to the donors, you need to complete 1023. All other tax exempts complete 1024.
I strongly suggest you contact an attorney to guide you in officially forming the tax exempt organization.
    It cannot be done informally.
Then, each year, depending upon what the gross proceeds are, you need to file either a 990-N, or a 990-EZ, as well as filing with the State Attorney General's Office.

So the process involves more than what I believe you think it does at present.

Unless gross receipts are normally < 5K. See 1023 instructions page 1 lower right corner.
