    E-filed return with wrong DDA number

    I E-filed a return for a new client this year. He wanted the money direct deposited into the same account it was sent to last year. I used the account number on his last years return and after E-filing the return, we realized, that was not his account number. He apparently received a refund anticipation loan from H&R Block last year and the account number on his return is some account number they use (i.e. not HIS personal account number). We've called the Service and they say that its been deposited into his account but its not there. He called the company that did his return last year and they said the refund has been returned to the Service.

    Any thoughts on how to resolve this matter?

    The "Where's My Refund" page on the IRS website will likely show that there is a problem with the refund and give a number to call. Calling that number should get it straightened out.

      Been There

      Last year one of my clients said to use the same account and when the return did not go into his checking on the expected date he remembered he closed the old account and opened a new one. The bank "kicked" the deposit back and IRS issued a check but it took approx 6 weeks.

        E-Filed & Direct Deposit

        I have all clients initial the 8879 next to the bank account number and routing number that is printed on the form.

        If it goes to a wrong account, that is their problem. I am not wasting valuable time to run down their error.

          Great Idea

          Jiggers,

          That is a fantastic idea. Even when they get us the info we are the one's inputting it into the computer. Having them double check the bank info is a great way to handle this.

            form 8879

            My form 8879 doesn't print the bank information on it, it prints on the second page of the 1040.

              Overkill

              It's probably overkill, but I still have my clients sign form 8453 and 8879. I tell them the 8453 is consenting (or not) to direct deposit and then have them double check page 2 of 1040.

                wrong account

                Several years ago I had tax software from pro system FX . I was not even signed up to do RALs but for some reason I got confused with the software , and somehow I filed the return as though I wanted to do a RAL and it accidently deposited my clients money in an account at a bank that I had never heard of on the East coast.
                To make a long story short, it took my client a couple of months to get her refund, I lost her as a client and I dropped pro system FX as my tax software.

                Your client will eventually get their refund, but dont count on it for a couple of months.

                  On regular Direct Deposit returns, Jackson Hewitt software prints out a Direct Deposit page for the taxpayer to sign that the refund is going to the proper account and RTN. There is no question then since they have signed.

                    Account Number

                    At H&R Block, we always get a cancelled check from the client. If there is a mistake (other than a closed account), then it is our fault.
