    Mentor

Please, I need a mentor whom I could communicate with via phone and can help me with tax questions. Sometimes I understand things but I just need a confirmation, that I understood correctly Because English is my second language I do not wish to make any mistakes. I work out of my house and do not have contact with other tax preparers. I hope there is someone out there who may have some time to help.

I hope I am permitted the above request on this forum, if not, I do apologize in advance.

    thank you

It seems to me we are all mentors to each other. Your English is quite clear and sometimes it is better to reduce one's understanding of the Code and other authorities to writing. Hence, I would recommend taking advantage of all the posters here rather than limiting yourself to one.

      Post on this board...

You have a huge number of mentors on this board. Post when you have questions. Also, do join a group with a local chapter for networking and mentoring and education: NAEA, NATP, etc. You might find a local CPA who specializes in more complex returns but needs to refer less complex returns to someone; the two of you might benefit not only by the referrals to each other but also by your discussions of the returns.

        Pocahontas

Solomon and Lion are so right. We all look out for each other, so to say, and will help each other. Regulars and new members.

If you need a little more contact and want to discuss something, feel free to leave a contact number or email address in my PM box. I may not be able to help you (can't help myself most of the time ), but we might be able to work through something together.

          likewise to DTS,

you may pm me and leave your phone/email address. I started like you, in my home and have used the TTB extensively. Without the help here I'd be up a tree even though I have been in practice over 15 years now. A lot of us are EA's but still need help from our collegues. Or in short, Everyone needs help now and then. Feel free to post or email at LamDrDD@gmail.com

            Location?

Where are you located? If we know what area of the country you are in, someone might actually be quite close to you that you could make contact with.

I agree about the groups. I belong to NAEA and the Florida Society of Enrolled Agents. We also have a local chapter that is quite active. We can call each other and we meet once a month. That is very good for networking.

                Mentors

I have found a vast number of mentors on this board, this is the only forum I am registered on but I read other ones as well. There are some pretty sharp people on this board and are generally very willing to share there experience with anyone that asks for it. Keep reading this board and any others you find along the way.

                  Love this board!!

I definitely count on this board tremendously for help with questions. This board has the most unselfish well educated tax people on it. They have their own businesses and plenty to do but they are willing to spend a little time every day to answer our questions and help us learn how to handle unusual situations.

Keep reading here and asking questions.

I also agree with everyone. When I started my practice seven years ago I immediately participated in this board (well first it was the "other" board). I was shocked to learn how little I know, and, honestly, I would never have dared to start my practice, had I known.

I became an EA in my second year and spend quite a bit of time on CPE and reading, always afraid I miss something very important on one of my clients return, or looking dump when faced with a question from a client.

Like P. English isn't my native language either and it takes me a long time reading and even more time writing anything. Often I don't know how to put in words what my question is (or worse what my question is anyway), so I commiserate with P. in the desire of a mentor. I have tried to find someone local but it hasn't been fruitful.

                    All the best P.

                          thank you everyone again,

Gretel I am glad to know that there is someone else in the same boat as me, like you, many times,I am afraid to ask a question because it may not make any sense to to some of the forum members, or they might be condescending because I am not making any sense. And like you I do have to read over and over again to make sure that I understood, correctly.

Dave I am in Victorville, San Bernardino County

I know that there was a well-known poster in your area that was in charge of the local chapter of an EA society in Barstow or Riverside. I don't see her on the board any longer, but she invited me to attend some meetings at her chapter.

All these orgs are great and you will meet nice, kind people, have dinner and participate in discussions and seminars.

You do yourself a disservice by not joining.

You should not be afraid to ask any question. I've been slapped because someone found it upsetting that I appear to be a student not a tax professional, asking questions that should have been addressed in a basic tax course, but really, it's a rarity that any member is condescending. Often what seems to be a simple question isn’t so simple, or what is given as what was thought to be a correct answer brings about some great discussion with more than one opinion.

                              I say ask away..............
