Has anyone tried deducting college as a medical deduction? My client's son has ADHD and will be attending Landmark College after graduating from a public high school. They specialize in students with learning disabilities. On their website they say check with your tax person to see if tuition and lodging etc is tax deductible. Any thoughts?

My first reaction is that the only tax benefit may be the Hope, Life time learing or fees and tuition deduction. This year the amount is going to be much higher for most.
I do not believe that someone who is capable of college work would qualify for a medical expense for that work..
Only an opinion with limited knowledge of the situation.AJ, EA

It appears that they are aware that there may be a tuition credit available...which would be true if they are an accredited school and your student meets any other requirement of the tuition credit rules...no medical deduction.DIY programs are not a replacement for a good tax pro

Called NATP
I called NATP for some guidance. They produced some reserch which makes me believe my clients may be able to deduct he cost of the Landmark School as a medical expense. The School is a two year program designed to teach the student how to function at a traditioanl 4 year school. /taht plus a doctor letter should meet the requirements to be deductible.

Landmark School is a premier college for students with learning disabilities and AD/HD and possibly they are aware of more than just the tuition deduction may apply. If it does qualify for special education, deductible costs also include meals and lodging at the special school.
