    Is there an automatic Fed extension?

    Is there an automatic Fed extension even if the taxpayer does nothing?

      Nope. You have to send it in. Some states have it.

          Correct, Fed requires the extension request. My state, California, grants an automatic extension - nothing to file to request it.
