    CA tax preparers......questions

    If the taxpayer does not have enough Sch A deductions to surpass the Fed standard deduction and takes standard deduction, does any of the Fed Sch A deductions flow to the CA individual return? Hopefully I worded that correctly.

    Yes, it should. I know my software (ProSeries) flows over the itemized deduction total to the CA state returns when the Federal portion of the return has a standard deduction.

      CA & IRS Sch A

      I enter all itemized deductions on IRS Sch A in the hopes that it will exceed the CA standard deductions, however, all CA taxes withheld and SDI payments will be backed out of the calculation when figuring the CA adjustment.
