    amending mfs

Has anyone had the pleasure to amend prior year MFS returns. I guess you do two 1040X returns showing each spouse with one amended reporting zeros and the other adding spouses income. Is that correct. Maybe attach a nice note explaining the situation?

    Thanks

These were turbo tax tims you had a kid in college and miised out on the education credits etc for a couple years.

    One amendment as MFJ

Pick a primary taxpayer. Amend his/her return to include the other spouse for the MFJ. You will have only one MFJ return combining the two spouses' info.

If they were DIY and not in your software, then prepare the return as if it were an original MFJ. Then, call up the X for federal and states and let it move the info to column C. Type in the info from your primary's original MFS return in column A. Your software should compute column B, but it should be mostly from the other spouse's original MFS return with differences for phaseouts, tax rates, etc.
