    2 ?? 09 estimates & quick bk question

Are taxpayers receiving their 09 estimate packages? So far none of my clients have told me, and I'm wondering if I should start printing their vouchers now instead of waiting until April 15, when they don't have them and want to pay.
My quick book Question: I do not have QB, but a client sent me her info on a CD from her QB program. If I take it to a computer that has quick books, can I just look at it and not worry about importing the info into something I don't want it in? Any help for a quick books dummy?

You will find that in many, many cases the IRS will not produce 1040ES vouchers and mail to the client, if his/her return was prepared last year by a professional tax preparer. Some states still do.

If the taxpayer used a return preparer last year, he will not be receiving his estimated tax vouchers.

You have to print them for him.

I think the IRS changed this a couple of years ago.

If the client sent you a backup copy of their company file on CD, you will have to restore it using the QB program on the other computer. This will create the QB company file on that computer and it will stay there unless you delete it when you are done.

Some of my clients received IRS generated vouchers last year, but no one has received them yet this year. I thought by doing them while I was in the return, it would save some time.
QB - Is making a company file difficult, or will it question me good enough that I can do it. Is deleting it after I get done a problem?

This doesn't exactly address your question, but once you get QB open you can set up reports and export the data into an Excel spreadsheet for later reference. I use this frequently on small cash-basis clents who don't have their COA set up right and are basically using QB as a check writing program. I just export the check register to Excel and then I can find anything I need.

QB will automatically restore the company file for you if the client has indeed given you a backup copy of their file.

In QB, you choose File...Open or Restore Company...pick Restore a backup copy...and then tell QB the drive location of the file. If you try to restore the company to a newer version of QB than the client uses, QB will give you a warning that once you convert the file you cannot go back to the prior version. That is OK, since you are not planning on making changes and giving it back to the client.

After you are done, you can delete the company file from the computer - you will just need to make note of where the file is located. I am assuming you are planning to restore this on a computer of someone you trust or a work associate - I would not do this on just any computer that happened to have QB installed : )

If you don't know anything about QB I would strongly advise against just getting the data or even P&L and B/S print outs. QB users notoriously mess up things in a way you could not dream up in your wildest dreams and I still have to find a P&L yet can rely on.

The info on QB is office in the home deducts, telephone, mileage, that kind of stuff. I just need to see what she put on it. I have the hard copies of their w-2's, etc. She assumed I had QB, and I didn't realize I couldn't open it until it came. Just a little glich that makes these last few weeks more hectic. Thanks for the helpful info

                    estimates

my clients usually get them and the ones i've done so far this year have called me back and asked me to print them their quarterlies, cause IRS didn't send them this year. so for the few i have left i will be printing the estimates.

Yeah, IRS no longer sends them.
