    Partnering E-file and Accounting

I have an acquaintance who does small business accounting and taxes, emphasis on accounting.
    I only do taxes.
    She doesn't efile, I do.

She wants me to efile some returns for her that require very little on my part. She will pay me a flat fee for each return e-filed.

I know I need to have 8879 for my files. Do I also need to keep copies of W2's and any other form with withholdings? Or is that her responsibility?

Any problems you foresee with this kind of partnering (of work, not officially business partners)?

As the ERO, you do need to retain the docs showing FIT w/h. Check pub 1345 & pub 1345A. Last time I checked, if the ERO is not the paid preparer, you needed to use an 8453 & mail in page 1 & 2 of the 1040 with paid preparer's signature and "Copy- Do Not Process" written on both pages. The 1345's will have the latest details for you. Find out all your requirements before you settle on your fee for this arrangement.

      The most important thing however

is that she can't prepare the returns and then merely forward them to you for efiling.

The clients themselves have to appear before with the prepared return so you can then
      take it from there.

I haven't efiled for another in maybe three years, but if I remember right, form 8379 is okay to use versus the 8453.

        Thanks

Well, that will sink this ship......the clients won't be coming here, I'm sure.

        Thanks for the input!
