    2008 Ammended return

I read on TTB a while ago that it may not be necessary to submit a 1040X if the amendment is done before April 15th. All one has to do is submit a new 1040 with the words "CORRECTED RETURN" accross the top of the front page.
Is this true? Or is a 1040X required.
    Thanks
    Larry

Differing opinions. Right or wrong I will continue with the 1040X until it is clearly stated to do the corrected only and not an amended return.

Same here. I am also thinking about the states. The two that I deal with most, MO & KS, will probably not know how to deal with a 'corrected' return.

I guess ultimately it depends on whether you're willing to take the leap of faith necessary to do something based exclusively because of hearsay, but with no verifiable source of that information.

My own speculation is that if you go back enough years there was such a thing as a "corrected return" -- or that the rumor started due to some states, or like an 1120S, where you mark a box for a corrected return.

For federal individual returns I will continue to do 1040X as the IRS instructions indicate. Nobody ever got in trouble for following official instructions.

          ok, thanks.

I'll go ahead and do the 1040X. Hate them.

Do you know the procedure on your software to do them? It is pretty easy. Open the amended screen have it fill in the return that exists, leave the screen and type in your changes. Go back to amended screen and fill in the explanation. I think X's are easy if you've done the return. I do them ALL the time. (Something I probably should not admit to.)

Also be sure to do whatever is required for the state returns before you make the changes. It's very easy to add the 1040X do the changes and then smack your head against the desk when you realize you forgot the state amended form.
