Tax - I don't know about NC, but there are several NC preparers on this board. JohnH, JoshinNC and so on. Maybe one of them will be on. I can only tell you about AR, OK & MA.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

Sandy (ST) is now located in NC, as well, so maybe one of them will have an answer for you.

          Well

          Taxea,

Do you know the answer to the original poster's question?

I am new to NC and I don't know the definitive answer, so I am hoping as Thomtax posted that one of our posters will inform us, such as John H, Erchess, JoshNC, etc. My research so far would lead me to believe that NC does not have a "renters credit" if that is what the OP is referring to. I believe California is one of the few States that offers Renters Credit.

It really gives a good feeling when you can assist a colleague.

No deduction for apartment rent on NC personal return, if I'm understanding your question right. Are there states where this would be an allowable deduction, aside from the states that allow renters to deduct an allowance for the property taxes included in the rent?

Do NC residents get a renter's credit like CA offers?

                Let's help instead..

I am in Illinois. I do know Indiana allows deduction for rent paid. Nothing to do with property tax.

I have never done NC return. Because Indiana allowes rent deduction, I thaught it might be a good idea to check if NC has simillar law.
So I think I was doing the right thing by asking a question.

Some people think that they know everything and other people ought to know everything and should never ask questions.!!!!

Taxea, I do not know your background but remember everyone is trying to make ends meet. I think this board is for pro as well as for others.

We are blessed with special skills and let's help as many people as possible.

                    Dennis:
I knew I'd seen a renter's credit somewhere ( I only prepare one CA return and I guess I had scanned over that line item even thought it doesn't apply to that client). I see from another post that Indiana also offers one, and I believe I remember seeing something along these lines on the Michigan returns in the past as well. Isn't the primary rationale to provide the renter an opportunity to deduct a portion of the property tax imposed on the landlord?

In any event, there's no renter's credit or other special break for renters in NC.

I believe NJ also offers renter's credit -- yes, to help offset property taxes. PA offers a renter's rebate, too, to eligible folks, but not through the income tax return. So, it's certainly a good question to ask, TAX.

JohnH - Mass has a renters deduction of 50% up to a cap of $3000.

I did a quick google search and it appears that MD, MI, and MN may also have one (although I saw a couple of blurbs that the MN credit may be in trouble or already gone).

Wisconsin has the Homestead credit for rent or property tax paid but only if income less that $24,500 and a small deduction for rent irregardless of what your income.

I did a Google yesterday, but came up short. Obviously, the wrong search words. What did you put in?
