    Have taxpayer that wants to claim father and sister who live in Mexico as dependents. I went through all the requirements to meet dependency test and taxpayer said said that she does supply over 50% of support for her father and sister. When asked how much does she send, she said $150 per month. That seems like such a small amount to be able to claim over 50% support, but was told in Mexico $150 is hugh. How would over tax preparers handle?

    I guess you could do a quick worksheet to show the numbers of how the $150/mo is over 50% of the support. Do a quick tally of the expenses they pay for in Mexico.

      Ask the client to help you fill out the worksheet on page 33 of Pub. 17.

      I think it is indeed possible that some of Mexico's most impoverished may be living on only a couple hundred dollars a month...
