    Earned Income Credit

Client's child's father is eligible according to the court and will claim exemption for 2008. Child lives with mother for whole year and according to her income she would be eligible for the EIC and HOH. Does this sound ok?

    Split the dependent

    Yes.
Mom claims HOH and EIC by claiming the dependent but NOT THE EXEMPTION.

Dad claims SINGLE and THE EXEMPTION. He will get the exemption and the Child Tax Credit.

Dad will need a signed 8332 every year he gets the exemption. Mom can sign it one time and designate the years on that one form 8332 if done properly.

      I agree, plus

It's possible that Mom got $300 stimulus rebate last year, and Dad may get $300 RRC this year.
If you loan someone $20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
