Error Code 0503

So I received error code 0503 (basically the name and SSN do not match IRS records received from social security administration).

I verified with the taxpayer and it appears the taxpayer just recently changed her last name (marriage). However, she forgot to file her name change with the social security office.

Here's my question: the Federal return was rejected but the State (CA) return was accepted. Can I simply make a correction on the last name and re-send the Federal? Or must I wait until she files her name change with social security and then re-file?

If you want to get it efiled now, you will need to change the last name. Your efile will have to match ss records. I have one gentleman that I file each year with the wrong spelling on his last name because ss has it misspelled. He contacted them about getting it corrected. They told him that at his age he should just keep doing this, even if it is incorrect. They did not want to correct things. So, we put a U where a Y should be. It looks odd, but it works.

And I have one who divorced (female) and changed her name legally back to her maiden name, but has yet to change it with social security. So for 5 years now, we are still filing her taxes with her married name.

I re-filed with the appropriate last name (the one shown on her social security card) and it's been accepted =)

I did advise client to make sure she makes all changes appropriately for next year.
