    new disclosure rules

New York Enrolled Agent (NYEA for short!) will probably appreciate this situation, since
he follows the new section 7216 broo ha hah closely.

My new client year had been having his return prepared for many year by his cousin, who is
also a regular on this board, and in fact referred client to me due to geographical considerations; plus the fact I suppose that I'm a good guy.

So at this point in 2008 preparation I need information from previous preparer's files on deprecation and basis. Looks to me like I need a disclosure letter signed by my client
permitting me to discuss with previous preparer, AND previous preparer needs letter
    allowing disclosure to me!

    What a crock!

The other choice is to have the client request the info from his old accountant and send it to him. This way you are not involved.
