    1. I believe that Iraq is considered a combat zone and if that's correct then the return does not have to be filed until some time after the soldier returns. That of course is not a popular option if the return is going to show a refund and if it is going to show a balance due then they really should estimate and pay that balance due by 4/15/09 to save money in the long run.

    2. You would need a POA in order for her to sign for him but the Military knows all about this and will facilitate doing it by fax.

    3. There are a number of tax savings available to military families. I would advise you to check with equinecpa before you finish this return. She does right many military returns and she is both a very nice person and very knowledgeable.

        sign without POA

        From Pub. 3

Spouse in combat zone. If your spouse is unable to
sign the return because he or she is serving in a combat
zone or is performing qualifying service outside of a com-
bat zone, and you do not have a power of attorney or other statement,
you can sign for your spouse. Attach a signed
statement to your return that explains that your spouse is
        serving in a combat zone.

TY for the corrections both of you. Equine I may have misremembered the part about your knowledge of military folks but I did not misremember your general tax knowledge or your kind spirit.
