I will admit to knowing Black Bart personally -- don't know whether that puts a feather in my hat or a grubworm, but nonetheless I will admit to knowing him.
This morning I saw a map on the weather channel which encompassed his home town. Arkansas is having one of those cracklin ice storms. [A "cracklin" ice storm is when you sit around wood stove because you have no power, and listen to hear <<CRRAAACK>>, another ice-laden tree splitting off a huge limb and landing on your car or house]. These are common in the mid-South, as certain conditions are much more favorable for the formation of ice than snow. For such a storm, we would be better off living much further north.
Middle Tennessee's last "cracklin" storm came in 1994, and my parents went three weeks without power. International Falls hit -28 with wind chill -65 and was better off.
I tried to call Bart this morning but no answer. I called the business next to him, and no answer. I concluded their town has no telephone service. Bart, y' old buzzard, if you log on, we're thinking of you. ThomTax is from Arkansas, but don't know where and whether he is affected. Occasionally, we have a post from Bonnie from Radcliffe, KY. The storm was even worse there, as that town is on the path from Paducah to Louisville.
I'm sure these folks will be alive and well when this is all over. But not a good thing to have happen and coming at a very bad time if they've got a heavy W-2 crowd right now.
