    Black Bart

I will admit to knowing Black Bart personally -- don't know whether that puts a feather in my hat or a grubworm, but nonetheless I will admit to knowing him.

This morning I saw a map on the weather channel which encompassed his home town. Arkansas is having one of those cracklin ice storms. [A "cracklin" ice storm is when you sit around wood stove because you have no power, and listen to hear <<CRRAAACK>>, another ice-laden tree splitting off a huge limb and landing on your car or house]. These are common in the mid-South, as certain conditions are much more favorable for the formation of ice than snow. For such a storm, we would be better off living much further north.

Middle Tennessee's last "cracklin" storm came in 1994, and my parents went three weeks without power. International Falls hit -28 with wind chill -65 and was better off.

I tried to call Bart this morning but no answer. I called the business next to him, and no answer. I concluded their town has no telephone service. Bart, y' old buzzard, if you log on, we're thinking of you. ThomTax is from Arkansas, but don't know where and whether he is affected. Occasionally, we have a post from Bonnie from Radcliffe, KY. The storm was even worse there, as that town is on the path from Paducah to Louisville.

I'm sure these folks will be alive and well when this is all over. But not a good thing to have happen and coming at a very bad time if they've got a heavy W-2 crowd right now.

We seemed to be along the border line for the ice storm. Although it stuttered a few times, power did not go out at home. However, when I got to the office, it had been out over 2 hours and in the process of kicking off and on, apparently took out my router. So I spent this morning regaining internet service.

We have several large pine limbs broken and trees in bad shape. This afternoon the sun is out and it's supposed to be up in the 50s tomorrow.

              Ice storm

I watched Fayetteville news last night. They had the UA basketball game on television. There was electricity at the gym, but it was out at all the coaches and one of the announcers homes. (I guess that you have to have your priorities straight.)

According to the news, which covered areas east to Eureka Springs, many will be out of electricity for another week and some will be out for two weeks. When interviewing people, one word kept coming up "war zone". OK I guess it's two words. There are crews in from all over, but there are just so many trees down, and still have ice on them, it is slow going.

Several years ago we had a freak hurricane that came far inland and knocked out power for about 2 weeks here in Charlotte, NC. The place really did look like a war zone with power poles down, tree limbs, siding, & roofing material all over the place, and everything just a general mess. It becamse hard to find gasoline and after a few days other basic necessities were getting harder to obtain.

However, that was in August so the temp wasn't much of an issue. I can't imagine being in the same situation and it being freezing & wet outside. I hope Bart & his family are OK, and look forward to hearing from him.
