    New Treasury Sec

Now that we have a Treasury Secretary sworn in that is an admitted tax cheat, does this mean that the small guy is ok cheating or is this still reserved for the politicians and bureaucrats?

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

    Corollary

This has its companion in the justice system.

If the President can commit purgery on a sworn oath and be exonerated by Congress, does that extend to the petty thief or drug dealer?

I wonder how far back we can go. Clinton? Nixon? Teapot Dome?

Kwame Kilpatrick thought it was ok.
I would put a favorite quote in here, but it would get me banned from the board.

Think How much things have changed...

..from the days of Bobby Bare...

"Home folks think I'm BIG in Deetroit City.
From the letters that I write they think I'm fine.
But by day I make the cars, and at night I make the bars.
If only they could read between the lines..."

I'm wondering if ANY final assembly plants exist in Detroit. Dodge was assembled in Hamtramck, it's gone. Plymouth on Mt. Elliott, it's gone. Mustang on Miller, it's gone. Earlier Fords and later Ford tractors in Highland Park, it's gone too. And I'm told NO ONE works on Zug Island anymore, once called the "dirtiest spot on earth" where a worker could drop his wrench in the blast furnace ash, and never be able to find it. The last of the assembly plants I knew about were Cadillac in SW Detroit and Ford in Wixom, and I think they're gone too. Flint was once the town of Buick...wonder how it fares today.

          Tax Cheat?

I thought the new Treasury Secretary was asking everyone to believe that he didn't know any better. I emailed both of my Senators that I believed his story but said it made him too financially irresponsible to hold any Cabinet position, much less Secretary of the Treasury. If he had looked into the cameras and said "I deliberately cheated. I am sorry." I would not have opposed his appointment.

If any of us did the same, we would lose our EA status and/or our ability to efile for clients.

The Treasury Secretary is a political position. It has nothing to do with the real world of taxes. Its like quantum physics. The rules are not the same as they are in the real world.

Taxes are like quantum physics?? I'm so underqualified! Oh wait, you're saying politics are like quantum physics??
              No wonder my head hurts.

That explains the black hole in the middle of my desk that swallows my paperwork. It also helps clarify the time dilation that seems to exist between "soon" on my part and "soon" on the part of the client.
In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.

Anybody want to speculate on how long Geithner has left as Treasury Secretary? Given the recent press about how overworked he is and then how he fell on his sword today over the AIG bonuses, I'm beginning to think he's the designated fall guy. You can't fire a Senator, so Dodd's lame attempt at running interference got nowhere. Plus he then reversed himself and threw the adminstration under the bus. I'd say a resignation will be forthcoming fro Geithner by the middle of next week.

I just hope that if he goes that he has long coat-tails and takes many with him.

                      Audit Them All

Do you think our national debt could be erased if all the senators, congress, president and all other people who work there (aides, lobbyists, etc. ). It seems there was a lot of tax owed just by a few people being looked at.

I think everyone that works in D.C. for either the President, senator, or congress should be audited.

Even if Congress passed a law that required EVERY CITIZEN to be audited once every ten years, they would exempt themselves.
