If they are clients that normally receive a refund it could be the need for the money ASAP.

I know I have lost a few clients this year to the HRB down the street offering the "bring in your last pay-stub and get up to $1,000 back on your anticipated refund". The only reason I am aware of this is because my clients did give me first right of refusal - could I offer something like this, which I do not offer any bank products.

One person told be HRB is charging only 9% interest. My guess is that it must be more like 9% monthly or else there are other fees involved, not that I'm bashing them, I'm assuming any of the major franchise outfits are able to charge more because they know there is a crowd out there willing to pay more. Unless they do charge a lower rate to lure in customers and make up the difference in the fees that are charged for actual preparation. It doesn't matter, I'm just rambling.

I wonder how the delayed reporting for financial institutions (2/15/09) is going to affect us?

That is a good point. I remember thinking about that when I first heard it but then forgot about it. Also the delayed IRS forms for ELF??? Hopefully it won't be a start, stop then start again working on tax returns. Too much handling> very costly in time. I've got to recover my time with extra billing.

I have 62 appointments right now, with 2-3 new appointments every day.
If I'm wrong, please correct me, because I don't have the tax knowledge y'all have. Cheers!

WOW! You must be a store front operation.

              Negotiated Charges

I had a client call yesterday that wanted to negotiate my fee with her. With the tough economic times, I can understand her attempt to bargain but I don't run my service that way. I also do her childrens' returns. I know darn well that if I cut her bill 10%, she'd tell her kids and the downward spiral begins.

I have a feeling that we will all be running into something simular this year. As I stated in an earlier post, I notified all clients that I will be discounting fees for clients that are collecting Unemployment Insurance. This means that everyone else will be at 2009 rates.

Ummm... we have 463 appts. scheduled already. We're not a store front, but rather provide home service. And that doesn't count the dependent returns that we pick up at many calls.

Should we assume that you "pre-schedule" appointments?

                      Absolutely!

With the way we do our schedule, it would be impossible not to.

How many cancellations do you get? There has been alot of talk about prescheduling but I have never considered it.

                          Very few

I'll probably schedule about 200 more. We haven't advertised in about 20 years. Our clients know that we get full every year and that there is no room to move them. Unless it's an absolute emergency everyone keeps their appt. This will be our 43rd year and some of the folks have been with us for over 30 years.

Nice going.............. my hat is off to you and your group.

Can I assume that 1040's is all that you do? Are they basic returns or a mix?

                              tilt53,
Do you prepare the returns while they are present or do they need to come back to finalize?
