TaxSlayer's ad for tax preparation

    TaxSlayer's ad for tax preparation

    Hi all,

    I may be late to the party with this but I saw an ad this morning on CNN for TaxSlayer tax prep for $9.95. Now, I know other vendors have done this and there's been a discussion in the past about it. I have never seen an ad from TaxSlayer to the public to have your state and federal taxes done for $9.95.

    Anyone else see this and should I be surprised that my software company is also my competition? Perhaps, this could be business as usual and I have never seen the ad. Anyone care to comment?

    I saw the add on CNBC this morning I think it is just started never saw it before.I do not use them but I would now not look at there software.

      As I Understand it

      Tax Slayer was a multi-office Tax Prep Service that developed and then began to sell its own software. I don't know whether they sold to individuals or tax professionals first but they have been selling to both for years. As of last year you could even pay them a fee and they would put your brand on the software for individuals and you could sell it in your office or via the website they would give you or both. If you sold from the website they would drop ship for you. My understanding is that most tax software companies sell software for individuals as well. I don't like it but I don't know what I can do about it.

        Most do compete with us, the tax professionals. But Drake never has and is not part of the free file consortium that theIRS set up to compete with us. I appreciate their attitude that tax professionals are their customers and not competing with us like Intuit, et al.

          Competition to Turbo-Tax

          Am I understanding that they are making their software available to individuals for $9.95 a shot? If so, they are really competing with TurboTax, and therefore competing with us only indirectly.

          Not sure I like this either, but most people who use it would be TurboTax customers who are looking for a price break.

            Competing aganist us has its benefits.....

            I just found out this summer that I can open TuboTax files within my ProSeries. This fall I had an insurance client come to me for he was having all kinds of trouble preparing his tax return with his TurboTax. He emailed hisTuboTax file, no problem opening it up in ProSeries and I resolved the problem but I bet he spent over $200 for preparing his tax return with TurboTax since he had a schedule C business etc.

              Well, this is the first time I had seen them as my competition in the way the ad displayed on CNN. I don't like it but like someone else mentioned, not a lot I can do about it short of not buying their software next year. I like TaxSlayer and have used it for years.

                Heard it on the radio last night.

                I am a TaxSlayer user and there has been no communication of this to the users whatsoever. Not that they owe us any explanation. For $9.95 it can't be very extensive, but appears to be head-on competition with TurboTax or HRB version.

                As a profession, our ranks should be estimated at least 150,000 or more. Time to develop our own. One guy had a post earlier regarding "free" software. Not sure that "free" really delivers anything of substance when all is said and done.

                If NATP or NAEA put up the resources to develop the software, made it available FREE to its members, then increased their membership dues by a couple hundred dollars, that would deliver us from these ever-voracious software companies gobbling up the competition, then working to stab us in the back.

                  Thomson (sp?) markets only to professionals. I found that fact intriguing when I was software shopping. But, I found the support at ProSystem fx blew my socks off; so I ended up back at CCH again (left ATX).

                    If you want support, try Drake. I have used several tax packages, and they are by far the best, and way above.

                      Your suggestion is wonderful. I would love to give the boot to the companies that become our competitors instead of making the software better and better.

                      Drake is a good product but it is much more costly than TaxSlayer Piglee. It's the only reason I didn't switch to Drake when I moved from Turbo Tax. Need lots of bang for my buck. I am a very small business working from home.
