    Surfing in Minnesota?

Current temp in the Twin Cities is 6 below, with more snow on the way. Ideal weather for surfing.

    Surfing

I think this is a tad wimpy. They should do it with trunks only, like we do here in CA. Now that takes guts.

    No wetsuits for us!

        Heat Wave

Low in some towns locally was 6 degrees as well, but ABOVE zero. This is about as cold as it will get in Tennessee. We have been below zero, but maybe 2 years out of every 10. Excluding the mountains, of course, whose upper reaches have a climate equivalent to Hudson Bay and snow on the ground from October to June.

We've got a guy I consult with from upper St. Croix valley, MN-WS. I asked him if it's just simply a matter of getting used to the cold weather makes it more endurable. (We Southerners cringe as the cold comes and goes down here). He said in the Arrowhead/North Shore "getting used to it" involves more sophisticated methods of protection, such as plugging drafts, insulated underwear, tough car batteries. The human body itself just never "gets used to it" and cannot stay out in that kind of cold very long.

Had an Air Force cousin who lived 3 years in Minot, ND, whose temperatures are so bad they make even Minneapolis people cringe. Had a parka-equipped coat with an elephant-like snout. If you walked the street and encountered another idiot stupid enough to be out in 40-below weather, you would put your "snout" together and talk through the snout to keep from exposing your face. This sounds like a tall tale to me, but he swears it to be the truth.

Supposed to "warm up" to 30 degrees tomorrow morning. Real bikini weather.

          Surfers

I saw the surfers ALWAYS wearing wetsuits on southern CA beaches. Coming from Chicago, I thought that was pretty wimpy. My stepdaughter did the Penguin Plunge early in March on the CT shore of Long Island Sound to raise money for Special Olympics. She couldn't feel her feet when she came out and lost her flip flops without knowing. She sat in her car with the heater running for some time before she was able to drive. But, her good deed was recognized; the Sound spit back her flip flops which were retrieved by a worker and returned to her!

I was just throwing a bit of bravado around. I didn't want the Minnesotans to think they were doing something special.

Yes, the surfers do wear the suits here, but my guess this is because of fad. The water here is not that uncomfortable that a wetsuit is necessary. I've been in our ocean a lot and never even thought of wearing one. As cold as it's been here this past week, a wetsuit, maybe!

In SF the water doesn't get above about 50 degrees, if that. Can get hypothermia, so wet suits are necessary. I miss the warm Atlantic in August at Virginia Beach!
