    Back return

Client did not file a 2002 income tax return. He was married at the time. He has since divorced. Ex wife has not filed since either. She had little income in 2002. Having him file MFS is going to kill him but my question is do I need the wifes SSN on the return in order for it to process it. I think not and just note 'unable to attain'. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Your stuck

To file MFJ you need spouse's SS # and her signature. This filing should have been part of the divorce negotiations.

        You don't need it

Just put - NA - or Not Available for the SSN.

I do several of these a year. There has been no problem. When the returns are that old, the IRS is just glad to get something.

You can get her number from a previous account transcript when they filed jointly. You will need form 8821 or 2848.
