    ERO/Transmitters

I am signing up for IRS eservices. What is the difference between a transmitter and an ERO. Should I sign up for both? Thanks.

If you are preparing and e-filing the returns to your software company to send off to the IRS, you are the ERO.

What is the transmitter? Is that the software company?

        Transmitter

Yes, they are. If you submit your returns directly to the IRS, you are both. If you're filling out 8633, and you'll be submitting only to the software company, you are not the transmitter, so don't check that section off.

is what I (actualy my corporation) is.

While the software company can act as the electronic transmitter (ET), an ERO may also
be an ET, thus enjoying the privilege of sending returns directly into IRS computers.
In my case I send most returns to IRS at Austin, TX, but others to Philadelphia, depending
          on residency state..

My corporation thus has an ERO number AND an ET number.
