My mother died last March. Since she was over the minimum filing amount her last 1040 was due this April 15. She is due a refund, not much but better than nothing. The attorney wanted to previously settle the estate, but I held it up for this purpose. Since the check will be made payable to the estate of Jane Doe it can only be deposited in the estate checking account even though I am the personal representative of the estate. The accountant advised me to file by paper and attach the death certificate and 1310 form which according to the IRS instructions were not necessary. Filing by paper was a mistake, in my opinion, as the rebate check will take considerably longer than filing electronically.
Now the bad part. Since the last two digits of her SSN are high we will have to wait until July 11 for the rebate check. The estate has already been open for a year. This is not going to stimulate the economy but slow it down. I wonder if I should send the rebate to the White House and ask them to use it to wipe out the national debt. The only alternative is to fill out the taxpayer advocate form. Any advice appreciated.
