Dealing with bank charges associated with medical expenses

Many / most medical providers are now adding a service fee of 2%-3% for anyone who uses a credit / debit card for payments. For uninsured medical costs, that can be a hefty sum.

It is my understanding the tax-related "medical expenses" would NOT include those costs. And insurance EOBs seem to support that concept.

So how are the tax pros addressing this issue? Asking to see medical bills etc is not a productive use of my time. The best approach I can reasonably use is to advise clients NOT to include such costs for any potentially deductible medical expenses.

Is this approach realistic, or am I just chasing rabbits and / or being overly picky??

FWIW, many charities are now doing something similar, but they just ask for an optional "larger donation" to offset their costs. I think this issue is separate. I use the allowable "donation" that the credit card charged.

    Thanks for your input.
