The IRS has said the most accurate information is in their IRS online accounts, one for each spouse.

I would remind them to look for "EIP3" on their bank statement. . .

Thanks, they checked the bank statements. I thought the stimulus payments did not follow the same rules as other refunds, f.e. reducing it by student loan payments. I will have them dig deeper, they should try to have an online account with the IRS. From income and dependent perpective, it's straight forward, $1,400 each.

If that's what actually happened, yes you can use 3911. First you should have the taxpayer check all his bank accounts to verify they didn't receive the payment.

    Stimulus short-paid

Does anyone else have a client like this? Both taxpayers (MFJ) got short-paid on their stimulus by weird amounts, like $76.25. However, the letters they received, both the one send at the time the stimulus payment was made and the letters just received, state that the IRS paid the full amount and income is far below the phase-out limit. Can I use form 3911?
