On November 14, 2016, Medicare announced that the basic premium for Part B coverage will be $134.00 per month during 2017. This represents an increase of $12.20 per month ... 10.0% ... above the basic premium of $121.80 for the year 2016. People already receiving social security benefits, however, and whose 2015 income (AGI) was less than $85k (single) or $170k (MFJ) will pay less in order that their net social security benefit will not decrease from what they received in 2016.
Persons who are covered by Medicare but are not yet receiving social security benefits will pay the full $134 premium, and those people as well as social security recipients whose 2015 incomes exceeded the $85k/$170k levels will pay higher premiums than the "standard/base" rate. There are four higher Part B premium levels, and they escalate sharply, based on AGI brackets, up to a maximum premium in 2017 of $428.60.
