I have this year entered the brave new world of Form 1040NR and the associated Form 8843. (Fortunately I had the early/off season to research the relevant issues.)
For anyone with prior experience, specifically with Form 8843 and relevant facts, here goes:
Client is in US with F1 (student) visa which was originally issued in 2010. During the summer of 2014, status will change to H1b. Client did not "attend classes" during 2012 (did so during prior years) but since early 2012 has been working in US under the OPT ("Optional Practical Training") program. Current employer under that program is in a different state from US college involved with initial F1 student status. It is my limited understanding that this OPT status is merely an adjustment/extension of his prior F1 "student" visa.
In any case, lines 9 and 10 of Part III of the 2012 Form 8843 are presenting a problem to me ("academic institution you attended during 2012"). Is he still "attending" the SAME school via their OPT managed program, or exactly what?
Again, I'm content with the facts......just need to match them to the doggone IRS form!
Thanks for input from anyone who may have been down this path before!
