Beginning March 1, 2013 the SSA will stop mailing checks to SS and SSI recipients. Payees will be required to receive their benefits either: (A) by direct deposit into an account at a financial institution, or (B) via an addition to a "Direct Express Debit MasterCard" ... a prepaid, rechargeable debit card. Recipients of several other categories of federal government payments, including the VA and the federal retirement system, will do the same.
I would assume that the SSA and other federal agencies have or soon will notify all paper check payees of this upcoming change. Nevertheless, it might be a good idea for each of us to review our own client lists and advise those clients who we know this change may affect.
