Her first name was 2 words with 2 initials with a long madien name with an hyphen and a long married name.
Now who would want all of that on their card? I used her first initial with her first name and middle initial and her madien name this year and next year with her long married name.
It was a nightmare over a simple thing. Never have seen anything like it and never want to again!

Last Name
If the name is Natalie B F Johnson-Williamson, then the IRS is looking for the four letters John. Her last name is Johnson-Williamson.Leave a comment:

I could not have said that better than you and S T. THANK YOU BOTH for saying it for me.that we "bother" is that we are genuinely interested in our clients and their tax situations.
My clients are the lifeblood of my business; they pay my way; they pay for my nice
vacations and cruises every year. They are the very reason I'm in business.
I care for them and.... they care for me. How Sweet it IS!

Exactly
That is the whole idea, and if we are in the service business, then that is what we need to do to retain clients and receive referrals. It is important to let the client know that we care, and every now and then, more often than not, go that extra little step to assist.
Today, for me was a prime example assisting a client, that had some radical changes in his life for 2009, and it took some lengthy discussion on the phone to determine how those changes were going to affect his 2009 tax year as well as other finances. I wasn't going to bill for the time on the phone as he is a client that I have had for over 20 years, however, as the phone call drew to a close, the client specifically stated that he expected an invoice for the time that I spent and thanked me for listening and assisting him.
That made me smile,

You should not have bothered. It is her responsiblity to provide the correct information. The SSA gives her a document until she gets her card. She should be the one to take the time to get it right. taxeaLeave a comment:

Glad it finally worked
I had one that was listed as (fictitious name, of course, for this posting) Jane Doe Smith Jones. Took us three tries. I think Smith Jones ended up being her last name with Doe her middle and Jane her first.Leave a comment:

Recent?
If she just changed her SS records, a SS speaker told us that they are now putting the last name (the one their computer considers the last name or names) on a second line from the other names. Haven't seen one yet, but it's long overdue. Have her call SSA Monday morning to ask what her last name is per their records. But, I still don't know what her last name has to do with a partnership name matching a partnership EIN.Leave a comment:

I've a partnership, correct name of which is "John G and Mary R Smith" (NOT their
real names! grin)
However when the 1065 if filed, it's always filed as Smith Trucking Company.
Legally speaking and with IRS it's the first line above which is official. However I've never
had a 1065 reject filing this way.
At any rate, you have till april 15th to file the 1065.Leave a comment:

I may be able to help with this...
Post an example of what the name looks like.
Without using your client's real name, post a fictitious name that has exactly the same number of characters, so I can see how it's formatted, i.e, where the hyphen is, and how it is structured.
What ethnicity is the client?
Believe it or not, this actually makes a difference...
There are different conventions for certain ethnic groups, such as the Spanish-speaking population, where people frequently have two last names.
I'd also like to know what the OLD name looked like...

Name
I've had times when a reject happened that fixing that name will not work. I believe the best thing to do is paper file it and all should be OK.

She changed her looong name on it last year. I have put it in 6 different ways and none of them will go in. It doesn't affect anything on the parnership return only her name going through. It always comes back with spouse's name wrong on SS card. That is because of so many names with her middle name ,her first name, her maiden name and married name; ;never seen anything like it on any SS card ever. None seems to work.By the way, partnerships are not due Monday. Corporations are, though. Are you filing a partnership with a person's last name and SSN? How long ago did she change her name? Maybe her old name is still in the computer. I still don't understand how that affects a partnership...Leave a comment:
