Taxpayer education Credits for a Friend

Taxpayer is claimng a friend as a dependent (old tax year to 2013) as taxpayer supported her and paid for tuition, etc

Taxpayer is questioning whether or not she can claim either Tuition/Fees or Lifetime Credit for this friend

I am thinking NOT and if so it would have to be either Tuition/Fees or Lifetime credit, correct?

    Opinions?

    Thanks

    Sandy

I think you can use any of the education credits for any dependent actually on your return. Right? Well, not the exclusion of 10% penalty for early withdrawal from an IRA for education.

It takes a lot more than that to claim a dependent exemption for someone -- are you sure the claim was correct?

As to your question about the qualifying person for education benefits, have you tried Pub 970, where your question is clearly answered?

        Thanks

Yes qualifies as a dependent - no income, taxpayer supported all year and also paid tuition

Tuition is part of support. Also, person had to not be anyone's Qualifying Child, and also had to live with taxpayer the entire year. Was it a commuter school?

A temporary absence for education would qualify, yes?
