IRS announces standard mileage rates for the year 2017

On December 13, 2016, the IRS announced the SMRs for the year 2017. The standard mileage rates for the use of a car, van, pickup or panel truck will be:

» 53.5 cents per mile for business miles driven (down 0.5 cent from 54 cents in 2016)
» 17 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes (down 2 cents from 19 cents in 2016)
» 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations (unchanged from 2016)

The first two SMRs above are subject to (and usually do) change each year based on the nationwide average costs of owning and operating a vehicle. The charitable rate is fixed by law and changes only when Congress changes it.
