    That brings back memories

    Woo Hoo!! Another veteran of what we used to call "hand cranking" a return. This reminds me of the story about a new tax staff accountant, in the mid-1970s, who was told by the Senior to "put a return on Fast Tax" (it had been done by hand the previous year). With training what it was in those days at that Big 8 firm, the new staff man had never heard of Fast Tax, so he thought it meant to do the return ASAP (which he spent most of the night doing, producing a beautiful hand cranked return that he gave to the Senior the next morning). The Senior's response was, of course, "what the hell is this?"

    That's a supposedly true story told to me by the poor staff accountant who hand cranked the return--he was a manager by that time so he could laugh about it. Even if it's apocryphal, it still makes me laugh every time I remember it.
